Success story overview

Over the past three years, the BBI JU-funded BioCannDo project focused intensively on communicating bio-based products and the bioeconomy. The project team gained a lot of experience, which it would now like to share with other communicators. Ten key insights are presented in BioCannDo’s recent publication The BioCanndo experience: Let’s talk about bio-based products.

Biodegradable nappies and sanitary pads could reduce the burden that fossil-based plastic litter puts on nature. The prototypes currently developed are meant to be of higher quality, but still, they are more expensive than the similar conventional products on the market. The BBI JU POLYBIOSKIN and EMBRACED projects are working on making nappies more sustainable.

The food industry is hungry for more plant protein, which is why researchers are working on extracting more from current sources.

The BBI JU BIOrescue project investigates how to transform used mushroom compost into valuable bio-based products such as biodegradable nanocarriers for drug encapsulation. These have now been successfully tested to reduce symptoms of a common grapevine disease.
